Welcome To Mii Blogg

Yeah, my blog is pretty straight-forward. "Does the Media affect America's Youth?" is the question. The answer- you decide.! (But don't decide until I finish my project)

Finding Sources

Finding sources for this project was surprisingly easy. At first, I thought that finding information, statistics, etc. for this topic would be a difficult task; however, I broke down what I really wanted to discover and found the necessary information. The search engine that helped me the most was actually Google: and you would have thought that EBSCO Host would be better, but actually it didn't really have what I was looking for. I only used sources that were credible or at least seemed credible-- Google did a good job of organizing the best ones.

Looking Back (Reflection Paragraph on Proccess)

Before doing the project,  I honestly thought that the media was good for children because it was good for me. The only component of the media that I would consider a negative influence would be video games;but, only because of the violence. After doing the research, I discovered that video games aren't the only components that affect kids negatively. TV, internet, music, magazines, billboards, etc. all have something to do with influencing kids. However, I already knew that most people believe that the internet and TV are bad for you-- I just had to be a rebel and try to prove those people wrong. Its ironic how I tried to prove them wrong and ended up being wrong the entire time. Anyway, I think that this project was a good way to introduce me to different ways do the following: edit your paper, make a works cited, cite sources, paraphrase, and analyze. This was a beneficial project and I enjoyed it.

What I found ( Reflection Paragraph on Findings)

While doing research for this project, I found an excess amount of imformation that supports those who say the media has a negative influence. I found that: 40% of kids who watch an excess amount of smoking in movies start smoking themselves (Rolfe),  kids around the age of twelve persuade their mom or dad to spend nearly $500 million a year because of advertisements (Ransohoff), " adolescents who developed an early interest in rock music were more likely to be influenced by their peers and less influenced by their parents than older adolescents." (Impact of Music Lyrics and Music Videos on Children and Youth (RE9144) (2009). What surprised me was how much parents spend a year because of advertisements. Those advertisers must have done their homework because that is ridiculous.I did find some good information: Sesame Street or Mister Rogers- can help with the idea of educational TV improving the knowledge of younger kids. There is evidence that also shows that a child's imaginative playing can have positive outcomes on kids (Educational TV Has Positive Effects on Toddlers and Preschoolers).

The General Media and its Ups and Downs (Finding Paragraph #3)

The general media has always been frowned upon by the general public. Everyone believes that the media is absolutely no good. In addition, my research proves that to be partly correct. For example, 400,000 children start to smoke because of the movies they see.(Rolfe) Also, statistics say that kids around the age of twelve persuade their mom or dad to spend nearly $500 million a year.(Ransohoff)   Information like this does not really help prove that the media is helpful: that was what my project was based around. Now, all that is needed is to reflect on why my thought process was wrong.

Internet//Games//Music - Kings of the Media (Finding Paragraph # 2)

Many have made the accusation that the internet, video games, music, etc. influence kids negatively. My personal response was "Internet and things of that nature actually help kids". Evidence was found that  prove my statement wrong. So, the official statement is " Internet, music, etc affects kids in a negatively depending on their amount of exposure to it" One example of how internet affects kid in a negative way is" around 13% of students surveyed reporting that recreational internet use has hindered academic performance" (New Media Effects on Today's Youth). Also, A Swedish study also discovered that children who took on to the genre of rock were probably going to be influenced by friends rather than their parents  (Committee on Communications). So, one could say that prolonged exposures to "fun" could be detrimental, but people are all different as well.

The youth is within TV's powerful grasp (Finding Paragraph # 1)

Many people believe that TV is a negative influence on children. Some believe that statement and some do not. However, proper research has to be done to get an actual answer. My research says that certain types of TV can actually be helpful. For example, shows like Sesame Street and things of that nature, teach kids the basic skills they need to be successful in life (Educational TV Has Positive Effects on Toddlers and Preschoolers). Many people may agree with this statement or disagree. While educational TV shows are helpful, too much of it cannot be good. Too much TV can cause obesity and a decline in grades.(Media, Grades and Personal Contentment).

Educational TV has Positive Effects ( Quote-Paraphrase-Citation # 5)

Summary: Educational programs are good for kids. This is because they teach kids things they need to know instead of trying to sell a product or showing a fight. However, too much TV can be detrimental to behavior and cause kids to be apathetic towards how they do things- being aggressive and not caring.

Quote: "The research found that there is evidence to suggest that educational television programs, such as Sesame Street and Mister Rogers, can aid in the acquisition of general knowledge plus improve overall cognitive knowledge among young children.
There is also evidence in the literature that children’s imaginative play can be positively affected by television content. Furthermore, there is evidence that educational television programming that emphasizes diversity can improve children’s racial attitudes.
On the negative side, there is evidence that television viewing can increase a child’s display of aggression. Children who watch aggressive programs and cartoons with lots of violence can be more likely to engage in aggressive behavior than those that do not."

Paraphrase: Some research discovered that there is evidence that says educational TV shows- like Sesame Street or Mister Rogers- can help with the idea of educational TV improving the knowledge of younger kids. There is evidence that also shows that a child's imaginative playing can have positive outcomes on kids. Also, kids' take on race can be improved by educational programs that encourage diversity. However, TV can also cause children to become aggressive. And TV shows that emphasis that, affects the attitudes of those children.

Advertisements Are Killer ( Quote-Paraphrase-Citatation #4 )

Summary: Advertisements are popping up everywhere and they are affecting what people buy. Because of kids' persuasive powers, most ads are aimed at them to get them to ask their parents for it. And teens may buy more with there own currency.

Quote: "Advertisements are everywhere — TV commercials, pop-up ads on the computer, magazines ads and billboards — and they have a huge impact on what people buy. Even though it is mostly adults who spend the money, commercials are often aimed at kids. If the advertising for a product is successful, kids will ask their parents to buy the product.

Marketers have obviously found success in advertising to kids: children ages 12 and under convince their parents to spend more than $500 million a year. Some teens are able to buy the products they see advertised on their own."

Paraphrase:Advertisements are popping up all over the place- TV, Radio, Internet, even billboards. And the influence what people purchase greatly. Most of the time, the adults spend the money; however, most ads are pointed towards children. If the ad for an item is persuasive enough, a child will ask their guardian to purchase it. So, the Marketers found it prudent to advertise towards kids, due to their "persuasive powers". Statistics say that kids around the age of twelve persuade their mom or dad to spend nearly $500 million a year.

TV is the Hot Commodity (Quote-Paraphrase-Citation #3)

Summary: In most American homes, children from ages 2 to 18 spend most of their time watching TV. Also, most kids have TV's in their bedrooms, along with the following: DVD players, VCR players, Cable TV, Satellite TV, and Premium Channels. Most of the older children have no restrictions on their TV time; having said that, 51% of those households have their TV's on most of the time-due to no TV restrictions.

Quote:  "TV viewing among kids is at an eight-year high. On average, children ages 2-5 spend 32 hours a week in front of a TV—watching television, DVDs, DVR and videos, and using a game console. Kids ages 6-11 spend about 28 hours a week in front of the TV. The vast majority of this viewing (97%) is of live TV [1].71% of 8- to 18-year-olds have a TV in their bedroom [1a]; 54% have a DVD/VCR player, 37% have cable/satellite TV, and 20% have premium channels [2]...In about two-thirds of households, the TV is "usually" on during meals [3]. In 53% of households of 7th- to 12th-graders, there are no rules about TV watching [4].In 51% of households, the TV is on "most" of the time [5]"

Paraphrase: The TV watching amount for kids is at an all time high. Children, from ages 2-5, spend their time in front of a television at an average of 32 hours per week. Children from ages 6-11 waste a total of 28 hours of their week watching TV. Most of the shows (97%) is live television. About 71 percent of 8-18 year old kids posses a television in their rooms:54% of them have a DVD player and 37percent of them have cable or satellite. A television is usually on during breakfast, lunch, or dinner in 2/3's of houses. Most older kids do not have restrictions on their television watching; so, their TV's are on for the majority of the time.

Naruto+Sasuke= Deadly Fight? (Photo-Caption-Citation #3)

This picture show two brazen kids throwing each other off of a cliff-violently. Apparently, the two are fighting with intent to do serious damage to the other; however, it is a very vibrant picture. Although the picture looks good-exciting even, it is a very inappropriate picture for kids to see. Imagine what could happen if kids tried to act this out? This photo definitely an example of negative media influence.

Smoking in the Box Office? (Quote-Paraphrase-Citation #2)

Summary: Because of some inappropriate movies, many kids have started doing inappropriate acts-smoking. It is because of movies with excessive smoking that about 40,000 kids have started smoking. About 40% of kids started smoking because of excess onscreen smoking.

Quote: " Every year, nearly 400,000 kids start smoking due to the influence of movies. The finding was highlighted at this week's meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics, held Oct. 7-10 in Atlanta. After accounting for factors linked to smoking behavior and movie-going frequency, they find that kids who see the most onscreen smoking are more than 2.5 times more likely to start smoking than kids who see the least onscreen smoking. The numbers are striking. Kids who watched very few movies hardly smoked at all. But among the 5% of kids who saw the most onscreen smoking, 40% had started smoking themselves.”

Paraphrase: 400,000 children start to smoke because of the movies they see. This discovery was founded during a meeting at the American Academy of Pediatrics. They found that children who see an excess of smoking in movies will be more likely to start smoking by 2.5 times, discussing the key factors associated to smoking habits in movies. However, 5% of the children who witnessed the highest amount of smoking in movies, about 40% of them started smoking on their own.

This picture shows young children using their cell phones. They look pretty "in" to it. I do not think there is anything wrong with these kids having cell phones. It is good for them to have fun with what they have and they look like they are enjoying their selves. And there is nothing wrong with that in my book.

Don't forget the lyrics....are innappropriate (Quote-Paraphrase-Citation #1)

Summary: Music has a great impact on the teenage youth. Sometimes, listening to excess amounts of negative music can be detrimental to your behavior. Listening to some genres of music and becoming addicted so early can really affect your behavior causing you to not listen to your elders; however, you may listen to your peers more.

Quote: "The results of one survey of 2760 14-to 16-year-olds in 10 different southeastern cities showed that that they listened to music an average of 40 hours per week. One Swedish study found that adolescents who developed an early interest in rock music were more likely to be influenced by their peers and less influenced by their parents than older adolescents."

Paraphrase: A survey was done on 2760 teenagers from 10 separate cities in the south-east. It showed that those kids listened to music for 40 hours a week on average. A Swedish study also discovered that children who took on to the genre of rock were probably going to be influenced by friends rather than their parents

Are you Blind?? (Photo-Caption-Citation #1)

This photograph would show an example of why children should not watch a certain amount of TV. Why?- It leads to addiction. Take any side you please on the debate over the media, but this is not how anyone should enjoy their time. Just sitting and watching excess amounts of TV alone can have abysmal outcomes; but watching TV with this much focus- so close up- can really wreck you in the long run.

Preliminary Links

- This article describes how modern television shows influence what kids eat. Although, many may think that it is focused on how TV shows show children bad eating habits, it mainly stated how some shows influenced kids to eat healthier foods as well as eating junkier foods. This piece helps me greatly; but, it does not give me all of the information I need to show presentable details.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/BacktoSchool-Survey-Shows-prnews-3935913569.html?x=0
- This particular article caught my attention because of the topic. It stated how tests say that shows such as "Camp Rock" and "Glee" encouraged kids to join school choirs and bands. This caught my attention because it showed me how influential the media can be; however, it also showed me how dangerous the media could potentially be.

http://www.mysocialnetwork.net/blog/410/g31/2006/11/new_media_effects_on_todays_yo.html
-The article above mainly discusses the internet's effect on "Generation Y". It states that around 13 percent of the students that were surveyed said that their excessive use of the internet altered his grades. I am not really fond of this article. Quite frankly, I think this is boring; however, it presents useful information.

 http://www.emaxhealth.com/22/10796.html
- Out of all four articles, I believe this one is my favorite because it relates to me. I have always been know to love video games and people often told me that I act like the "karate men" I play with on a game. This article talked about video game's influence on the youth, whether it was a positive or negative influence.
